Raw Denim: ‘Digging’ in
We're diving deep into the world of raw denim - that rugged, unrefined fabric that's been making waves in the realm of streetwear.
First things first: what exactly is raw denim? Well, imagine denim straight out of the loom, untouched by the hands of time or the harsh chemicals of modern garment finishing processes. It's denim in its purest form, with all its raw edges and unadulterated charm intact.
Now, let's rewind the denim timeline a bit and uncover its humble beginnings. Picture the bustling streets of 19th-century America, where hardworking folks like miners, cowboys, and yes, railroad workers, needed sturdy clothing that could withstand the rigors of their labor-intensive jobs. Enter raw denim, with its rugged durability and no-frills attitude, ready to take on whatever the world threw its way.
So, how exactly did raw denim make the leap from workwear staple to street style essential? Well, it's all about that ineffable allure of authenticity. In a world inundated with mass-produced, cookie-cutter fashion, raw denim stands out as a beacon of individuality and craftsmanship.
But it's not just about looks - raw denim has substance too. With its high-quality construction and sturdy fabric, it's built to last, defying the disposable mentality of fast fashion and offering a sustainable alternative for eco-conscious consumers.
Now, let's talk about the journey from the factory floor to your closet. The making of raw denim is a labor of love, involving traditional techniques passed down through generations of denim artisans. From the spinning of raw cotton fibers to the weaving of the denim fabric and the indigo dyeing process, every step is imbued with a sense of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
And here's the best part: raw denim gets better with age. As you wear it, wash it (or don't wash it - we won't judge), and live your life in it, the denim molds to your body, developing unique fades and creases that tell the story of your adventures.
So, the next time you slip into a pair of raw denim jeans, take a moment to appreciate the journey they've been on - from the mines of yesteryear to the streets of today's urban playgrounds. And as you strut your stuff, know that you're not just wearing a pair of jeans - you're wearing a piece of history.
BEHIND OUR RAW DENIM
THE “CANARY’S”
Made using a Raw Indigo Denim that was typically utilised by Australian coal miners back in the day. Selected because it is tough, heavyweight and breathable.
They were then named based on the famous saying “Canary in a Coal Mine”, linking back to their origins.
NOTE: ‘Canary in a Coal Mine’ is also a song by ‘The Police’, and it is one of the best songs ever made. Give it a listen…
